Mavs Come Up Empty In Loss To Regis

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – Colorado Mesa was unable to score Sunday afternoon against Regis, but it wasn't for lack of chances.

The Mavericks launched 34 shots at the Rangers' goal, but Regis goalkeeper Greg L'Hommedieu made 10 saves to keep CMU out of the net while Rayhan Carlson du-Toit and Viljhamur Kaldal scored at the other end to give Regis a 2-0 victory.

The Mavericks nearly tripled the number of shots that Regis took (12) and had 10 corner kicks compared to just one for the hosts. A Regis red card gave CMU a man advantage for the final 27 minutes of the match, but none of the Mavs' 13 shots after Regis went to 10 men went in.

Colton Shafer led the way offensively with seven shots and three on target for CMU. Joey Joiner also had three shots on goal amongst five total shot attempts. Winger Daisuke Takanka and the center back duo of Isa Trujillo and Jorge Rodriguez all had four shot attempts.

Diego Chavez conceded for the first time this season, with Carlson-Du Toit scoring in the 34th minute and Kaldal adding on in the 49th minute. Chavez now has two goals allowed against 14 saves in 390 minutes of action. After two relief appearances early in the year, Chavez has started each of the past three and four out of the past five matches for the Mavs.

At 3-4-1 in RMAC play and 8-6-1 overall, CMU is tied with MSU Denver for seventh place, just outside of the top six that make the RMAC Tournament. The Mavericks have two matches left in the season, both at home next weekend. The Mavs will battle Colorado School of Mines on Friday at 7 p.m. before completing the regular season on Sunday vs. Colorado Christian at 3 p.m.
