Spearfish, S.D. – Despite the last-minute schedule changes, the Colorado Mesa men's basketball team handled their business trip up north, handing Black Hills State their first conference loss, 81-71 Sunday afternoon in the Donald E. Young Center.
The Mavericks avenge their earlier season loss to the Yellowjackets, behind a career high performance from
Trevor Baskin. The redshirt freshman racked up 33-points on the afternoon to lead all scorers, hitting an efficient 8-for-8 and 2-for-2 from deep in a big second half that propelled the team to victory.
Blaise Threatt added 22-points,
Mac Riniker managing the defensive efforts with 10 rebounds and three steals.
A 6-0 run early in the first half, gave the Mavs one of the two 6-point leads of the first half. They would have the upper hand for a majority of the opening period, up until the final few minutes of the half when Yellowjackets would take over and go into halftime with a 7-point edge.
The host's lead would quickly disappear in the second half as the Mavs went on a 10-0 run. Baskin opened play with a couple of layups, assisting on the 3-pointer that would even the score at 40. The following possession it would be Baskin connecting from deep to over take the lead once again at 43-40.
Their lead would continue to increase throughout the period, going up by as many as 14-after the final media timeout.
BHSU connected on a few shots in the last minute, but sent CMU to the line with Threatt making the final free throw and the defensive rebound down the stretch for the final 81-71 score.
Joel Scott finished with 26 points and 13 rebounds for the Yellowjackets.
The Mavericks push their win streak to six games, and return home next weekend to face-off with MSU Denver and Colorado Christian.
