GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – The Mavericks were able to secure a 63-39 victory as they broke away early on Saturday night against Western Colorado University.
The duo of graduate student guards
Daniella Turner and
Mariah Martin combined for 49 points throughout the contest. Turner shot 23 points while Martin led the team with 26 points.
Martin was able to stun the Mountaineers not once but twice as she showed a back-cut pass to Turner before Turner went for the shot. The guard from Sandy, Utah later was able to break the ankles of two of her defenders then made the basket herself. Martin went 11-26 from the field and 2-3 from the arc.
The Mavericks were able to find success in the jump shot and the layup inside the paint as they were able to score 32 points from inside the paint.
As a team the Mavericks were able to put up 40 rebounds. They also were able to have nine total blocks.
Graduate student guard
Sophie Anderson continued to shine defensively for the Mavericks like she has done all season. Anderson was able to defend the Mountaineers shooter Emmery Wagstaff holding her to two points throughout the whole game.
The Mavericks continue conference play on Feb.1 as they head to Salt Lake City, Utah to take on the Westminster Griffins. Tip-off is set for 5 p.m.
