GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – The Colorado Mesa women's basketball team received huge nights from a pair of seniors in a 66-41 win over Fort Lewis on Friday (Jan. 28) evening in Brownson Arena in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference action.
Mariah Martin finished with a game-high 22 points on 8-of-16 shooting including five makes from beyond the arc. She also handed out seven assists and pulled down four rebounds.
Senior
Kelsey Siemons finished with a double-double with 17 points and a game-high 11 rebounds. She was 7-for-12 from the field and 3-for-7 from beyond the arc.
The duo nearly outscored Fort Lewis by themselves 41-39.
The Maverick defense was outstanding on the evening allowing just 12 made field goals (12-for-54) with the Skyhawks shooting just 22 percent. They outrebounded the Skyhawks 42-31 and were heled to single digits in two of the four quarters of action.
Skyhawk Sydney Candalaria is one of the elite scorers in the conference and senior
Sophie Anderson drew the assignment of guarding her. Candalaria may have scored 21 points on the night but was held to 5-of-28 shooting from the field and just two made threes. She was 9-for-9 from the free-throw line.
Daniella Turner was held in check on the night as she was in foul trouble throughout the evening. She finished with nine points but saw her streak of 19 consecutive games in double figures halted.
Colorado Mesa has won seven straight games in the rivalry with the Skyhawks not winning in Grand Junction since 2010.
The Mavericks will take on their Western Slope rival from Gunnison the Western Colorado Mountaineers. Tomorrow night will also mark the annual Blizzard in Brownson presented by Coca Cola where we will have plenty of giveaways and games throughout the night and fans are encouraged to wear white.
