GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – The Colorado Mesa women's basketball team needed a big bounce back game after the loss to MSU Denver the previous night and they got just that. The Mavericks defeated Colorado Christian 78-58 on Saturday (Jan. 15) evening in Brownson Arena in a key Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference matchup.
The effort on the defensive end showed in the first half as they limited the Cougars to just 22 points. They shot just 29 percent from the field and were out rebounded 26-13 in the half. For the game, CCU shot just 33.8 percent and a touch over 31 percent from beyond the arc.
The focus on the offensive end was apparent as well as they came out and shot 50 percent in the first half and just over 50 percent for the game. They made ten three-pointers at a clip of 45.5 percent.
Daniella Turner and
Mariah Martin shared the game-high scoring honors with 22 points apiece. Turner completed her double-double with a game-high 10 rebounds while Martin handed out nine assists.
Senior
Sophie Anderson tallied a career-high 18 points while pulling down eight rebounds and handed out four assists.
Kelsey Siemons grabbed ten rebounds to round out the Maverick offensive superlatives.
The win pushes the Mavericks record to 11-2 overall and 6-2 in the conference. It also extends the win streak over Colorado Christian to six games, and it is also nine straight wins over the Cougars in Brownson Arena. The Cougars have not won in Brownson Arena since 2011.
Colorado Mesa will be back in action on the road next weekend when they travel to the front range for a pair of crucial matchups. They will take on Colorado School of Mines on Friday at 5:30pm in Golden followed by a showdown with Regis on Saturday at 4pm.
