Salt Lake City, Utah -- A five trip road swing was closed out with a 2-0 victory for the Colorado Mesa men's soccer team Wednesday evening against Westminster on Dumke Field. The win brings the Mavericks to 6-1 on the season with one more game in the non-conference portion.
Throughout 90-minutes of play there were 21 fouls called and four yellow cards, as the teams battled nearly shot for shot. Westminster outshot the Mavs 13 to 11, and had one more shot on goal.
Alec Fronapfel brought his season total to four with a goal in the 21
st minute.
Aaron Martinez was in on the assist, taking the initial shot that was deflected by the Griffin keeper and rolled to the feet of Fronapfel who made the most of the second chance.
Just before the teams broke for the half,
Jannick Lange put in an insurance goal, his first career and season tally.
Raymond Jackson sent a powerful throw in, into a slew of players in the box where
Jorge Rodriguez made contact before Lange charged in to register the goal.
Both teams were turned up the defensive mentality in the second half, the Mavericks withheld from taking a shot on goal. The Griffins took two of the their own, and had half dozen opportunities from the corner but
Connor Durant held strong and did not allow anything through.
Behind three saves, Durant has four shutouts and is 6-0 while between the posts.
The Mavericks will finally return home, closing out the non-conference portion of the season taking on Fort Lewis Friday on Maverick Field. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
