Big Second Half Lifts Mavs over Falcons in Season Opener

Trujillo, Fronapfel and Joiner score in 3-0 victory

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – Three different Colorado Mesa players found the back of a net in Thursday against Texas Permian Basin on Maverick Field, lifting the Mavs to a shutout victory in their season opener.

Within a 10-minute span of each other, Isa Trujillo, Alec Fronapfel and Joey Joiner each netted their first goals of the season. It was a night of firsts for redshirt junior goalkeeper, Connor Durant. First start, first victory and first shutout, tallying five saves throughout regulation to keep the Falcons scoreless.

CMU was on the attack from the get go. A couple of breakaways and one-on-one opportunities gave way to what seemed to be Maverick goals, only to have them reversed by offside calls. In the first half, the Mavs maintained an edge in possession, but had five offside calls against them. All four of the shots taken in the first half were targeted between the frame.

After a scoreless first half, the team's battled to get on the board in the second. UTPB almost struck first on a one-on-one, but just missed wide, keeping the hopes of a shutout alive.
From the far-left corner, Ethan Anderson sent a shot just over the front of the goal, in the air waiting was Trujillo who soared above the defenders and headed it into the bottom right corner for the first score of the night.

Keeping the ball in scoring territory, John Roberts connected with Alec Fronapfel nearly a minute later to put the Mavs up 2-0.

With time winding down, Chris Boyd got in on the offensive help, finding Joey Joiner at the 86-minute mark to leave no doubt on the way to a 3-0 victory.

UTPB held a slight 11-10 edge in shots, but CMU placed nine of their shots on goal and got to the corner six times to the Falcons four.

Colorado Mesa will look to build on their win Saturday when they take on Texas A&M International in another night cap. The Dustdevils played just before the Mavs, falling to Montana State – Billings in overtime 3-2.
