GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – After scoring multiple goals in their season opener 48-hours prior, Saturday's contest was decided by just one. In the 94
th minute,
Alec Fronapfel came up with the golden goal that would give Colorado Mesa the overtime win.
The goal was the sophomore forward's second of the season, and the 14
th in his young career.
Demetrio Baldo and
Chris Boyd were credited with the assists, the first for Baldo and Boyd now with two of his own.
Connor Durant played a big role in the win, making seven crucial saves throughout the night, earning him his second shutout.
Texas A&M International held a 13-11 advantage in shots, seven of which targeted at the goal. The Maverick's five shots on goal were defended well by Nils van der
Landen, who made four saves on the night.
It was a dog fight from the start, both teams vying for possession. TAMIU were awarded a number of free kick opportunities just outside of the box, tasking CMU to clear the ball. Durant used all of his 6'2 frame to keep the ball out of the net, leaving the Dustdevil strikers frustrated.
On the opposite end of the field, the Mavs took strikes of their own - none getting through to score.
After heading into the break scoreless, CMU came out looking to get on the board and had a few close calls. None would be closer though than the shot that almost sealed the deal in the last seconds of regulation. Fronapfel found himself in a one-on-one with the goalie, getting a slight touch that rolled right past the goalie and missed the right post by inches. He would get his moment though minutes later in extra minutes.
As overtime got underway, the Mavs worked diligently to keep the ball on the Dustdevils half of the field, successfully overtaking a pass and setting up a throw in. From the cement,
Raymond Jackson sent a high ball into the box, bouncing off the heads of Baldo and Boyd, eventually finding
Alec Fronapfel who bicycle kicked it over the keeper's hands for the game winner.
The Mavericks finish the opening weekend going 2-0, and will have their first road tests next weekend as they head up to Nampa, Idaho to face Northwest Nazarene and MSU Billings.
