Early Goals Spoil Mavericks Streak

Leo Mireles scores in back-to-back games, gives Mavs lone goal

Wichita Falls, Tex. – The Colorado Mesa men's soccer team had their winning streak snapped Saturday morning, dropping a 2-1 decision to No. 25 Fort Hays State in game two of the MSU Classic. Alec Fronapfel teamed up with Leo Mireles, netting the team's lone goal of the day at the 14-minute mark. Fronapfel's goal is the third of the season, and is tied for the team lead. Mireles continued his offensive presence, notching his first assist of the season after scoring in the previous game against Simon Frase.

The Mavericks took 24 shots, compared to the Tigers 10 and placed 11 shots on goal versus their opponents three. CMU also held a 7-to-1 edge in corner kicks. Fort Hays would have the upper hand in saves however, tallying 10 on the day to take the win.

Rhett Cook made his first start in goal, playing all 90-minutes and picked up a save.

All three goals were scored in the first half, the first coming from Viktor Robertsson in the 8th-minute.

Just into the 14th-minute, Fronapfel and Mireles converted on the equalizer. The goal however would be short lived, as the Tigers would respond nearly 30-seconds later to regain the lead.

Gabriel Peres led the team in shots taking six, three focused between the frame. Five other Mavericks took multiple shots on the day, marking a new season high in shots (24) and shots on goal (11)

The team continues a five-game road swing, heading to Salt Lake City to take on Westminster in a non-conference midweek matchup, Sept. 22 at Dumke Field. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
