NAMPA, Idaho – The Colorado Mesa men's soccer extended their win streak to four, thanks to a last-minute goal from
David Peters that lifted the team to a 2-1 win over Northwest Nazarene to close out their road trip.
It had been less than 48-hours since the Mavericks claimed their third victory by an identical score, over MSU Billings. CMU finished with a 14-8 advantage in shots, but were one shy of matching NNU's four shots on goal. In the second half, the Mavericks limited their opponent to just four shots, while doubling their attempts on the opposite side. The Mavericks also got to the corner nine times, to the Nighthawks two.
After producing two goals in the previous game,
Chris Boyd got his team on the board 24
th-minute, soaring over the defender and netting a header off a cross from
Joey Joiner.
The Nighthawks would tie things up in the 55
th-minute, presenting the challenge as to which team would score the go-ahead goal and decide the match.
It would be a back and forth affair, up until the final 30-seconds of regulation, when
David Peters won the possession at the top of the box, adding the exclamation point by scoring his first career goal, and the eventual game winner.
Connor Durant made three saves, while Sawyer Price snagged two for NNU. Sebastian Cotrau led the team with four shots, three on goal and was behind the team's lone goal.
The Maverick men will return home briefly, before heading back on the road to Wichita Falls, Texas. They will take on Simon Fraser on Thursday, followed by Fort Hays State on Saturday. Simon Fraser sits at 3-1 on the season, and is riding a three-game win streak. Fort Hays' sits at 1-1-1 on the season, 1-1 against fellow RMAC members.
