Five Goals Give Mavericks Fifth Win of the Season

Box Score Wichita Falls, Tex. – The Colorado Mesa men's soccer team recorded a season high five goals, on their way to a shutout over No. 19 Simon Fraser Thursday afternoon at Stang Park on day one of the MSU Classic. Ethan Anderson collected his first and second goals of the season, while Fernando Morales, Leo Mireles and John Roberts each tallied their first scores of the young season to aid in the win.

Connor Durant added three saves in goal to secure his third shutout of the season. Colorado Mesa took 12 shots to Simon Fraser's seven, and finished with a 7-4 edge in shots on goal and corner kicks. 18 fouls were called throughout the match, 13 of them directed at Simon Fraser.

SFU were the first to make a move on goal, taking the opening two shots of the afternoon. Just under 10-minutes in, CMU would have their first free kick attempt, and were then awarded another one two minutes later. Located just outside of the box, Ethan Anderson lined up and chipped one over the defensive wall into the top-left corner of the goal for the team's first nod.

At the 33-minute mark, another SFU foul set up gave way to another Maverick free kick. Anderson would set up yet again, this time chipping one into the opposite corner of the goal, putting his team up by two.

Before the teams broke for the half, Raymond Jackson got in on the offensive efforts, sending a pass into the center of the box, falling at the feet of Fernando Morales who notched his first goal, giving a team a 3-0 lead going into the break.

Both teams were quiet to open the second half. It wasn't until the 77th-minute when John Roberts had an open lane and took a shot from the right side of the box, finding the twine for the team's fourth goal.

Leo Mireles capped off the scoring in the 82nd-minute, placing a header past the SFU keeper, thanks to a pass from Roberts.

With Friday off, the Mavericks will prepare to take on their second ranked opponent in Fort Hays State, Saturday at 10:30 a.m. at Stang Park.
