PUEBLO, Colo. – The No. 1 Colorado Mesa baseball team ran their win streak to 20 games and clinched at least a share of the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference title after a doubleheader sweep of the CSU Pueblo ThunderWolves in a rare Friday doubleheader at Rawlings Field.
In game one, the ThunderWolves scored three runs in the first inning but the Mavericks scored seven unanswered runs in a 7-3 win to open the series.
Tyler Parker got the Mavericks big third inning started while
Jordan Stubbings delivered the big blow. Parker laced an RBI single up the middle that scored
Harrison Rodgers from second base to make it 3-1. Three batters later, Stubbings uncorked a three-run homer to left field to put the Mavericks up 4-3 after three innings of play.
In the fifth inning,
Matthew Turner hit his RMAC-leading 16
th home run of the season, a solo shot to right field to make it 5-3 after five innings.
Colorado Mesa added some insurance in the seventh inning, plating a pair of runs.
Andrew Morris may not have had his best stuff early but came alive as the game went on. Morris (7-0) allowed three runs (two earned) on nine hits, walked two and struck out four to earn the complete game victory on the mound.
After the first inning, Morris scattered five hits and walked just one in the final six innings of play.
In the night cap, the two teams were tied after five innings of play, but Colorado Mesa scored seven runs in the final two innings of play to capture the 12-6 win and secured the doubleheader sweep.
Haydn McGeary's bat came alive as the Mavericks hit four home runs in the win.
McGeary finished the game 3-for-5 with two runs scored and five runs driven in. The sophomore hit the first of two home runs in the first inning with a big fly to right field, giving the Mavericks a 1-0 lead after one.
His second round tripper came in the big sixth inning as he hit a three-run jack to right field making it 8-5 Mavericks. The two home runs give him 14 on the season and kept his batting average above .500 at .504.
Caleb Farmer and
Conrad Villafuerte hit back-to-back home runs in the fifth inning. For both hitters, it was their sixth home runs of the season.
Spencer Bramwell and
Christian Slater each had two hits for the Mavericks.
Anthony Durbano earned the win in relief of starter
Ryan Day. Durbano (4-1) pitched the final two and two-thirds innings and allowed one run on four hits while striking out three.
The Mavericks will look to clinch the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference outright tomorrow night at 7pm. The game will be played at Runyan Field as part of 'Pack the Park' night in Pueblo.
