Mavericks Suffer Tough Loss to End Season

SAN ANGELO, Texas – Colorado Mesa's run at their second consecutive NCAA South Central Region title came to an end on Saturday (May 29) afternoon as they fell 7-6 to West Texas A&M in an elimination game at Foster Field.

Colorado Mesa took the early lead at 3-0 after three innings of play. Caleb Farmer executed a safety squeeze to score Spencer Bramwell followed by a RBI double by Harrison Rodgers in the second inning. In the third, Tyler Parker laid down a perfect safety squeeze bunt to score Matthew Turner to cap the Mavericks three early runs.

The Buffalos answered back with four runs in the top of the fourth inning. They worked the bases loaded on Kannon Handy but the lefty pitcher was just one strike away from getting out of the jam with no damage, but two straight hits scored four runs in the frame.

Handy went five innings and allowed four runs on five hits, walked four and struck out four in 105 pitches.

The Mavericks regained the lead in the bottom of the sixth with two runs in the inning. Spencer Bramwell led off with a triple to right field that the WT defender lost in the sun. Farmer walked followed by Harrison Rodgers' second RBI double of the game. Chase Hamilton executed the third safety squeeze of the game for Colorado Mesa to make it 5-4 Mavericks after six.

Hamilton came back up to the plate in the bottom of the eighth inning and delivered a RBI single to left center to give the Mavericks some insurance.

The insurance wasn't enough as the Buffalos plated three runs in the top of the ninth inning while Colorado Mesa couldn't muster anything in the bottom half.

Bramwell finished the game with three hits including a double and a triple and two runs scored while Rodgers was 2-for-3 with two doubles and two RBIs.

The Mavericks end their season with a 42-7 overall record.
