SAN ANGELO, Texas – Colorado Mesa and host Angelo State tangled in a much-anticipated showdown on Friday (May 28) evening at Foster Field. In this bout, the Rams got the best of the Mavericks 5-2 with the two teams racking up more strikeouts (23) than hits (13) in the matchup.
Angelo State jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning on a Josh Elvir two-run home run before adding on one more run in the second inning on a safety squeeze by Reece Johnson.
The Rams scored two more runs in the fourth inning which made it 5-0 before the Mavericks would strike.
Conrad Villefuerte hit a sacrifice fly to left field which scored
Haydn McGeary for the Mavericks first run of the game to cut the lead to 5-1 after six innings.
The Mavericks final run of the game came in the top of the ninth inning on a sacrifice fly by
Caleb Farmer that scored Villafuerte from third.
Colorado Mesa's big opportunity in the game came in the top of the fifth inning. The Mavericks loaded the bases after a
Harrison Rodgers walked followed by a
Caleb Farmer single to center field.
Spencer Bramwell then walked on four straight pitches to load the bases and force the Rams to make a pitching change.
After the change, the Mavericks would go down in order on three straight strikeouts to end the threat.
Ryan Day was saddled with his first loss of the season after allowing five runs on six hits walked two and struck out seven in six innings of work.
Gage Edwards backed up Day on the mound, firing the final two innings of work and allowing just a hit while striking out four.
Colorado Mesa will be back in action tomorrow afternoon at 1pm when they face West Texas A&M.
