Mavericks Look to Grab Fifth Regional Championship this Week

CHASING HISTORY

Colorado Mesa is closing in on some history for Division II Baseball. The Mavericks are averaging a nation's best 12.9 runs per game which would also be an NCAA National record that was set in 2000 by Savannah State when they scored 617 runs in 49 games for a 12.59 average.

The Mavericks currently have scored 593 runs in 46 games and would need to average eight runs per game if they won the tournament straight through in three games to stay on pace.

CHASING HISTORY 2.0

Sophomore righthander Andrew Morris has picked up plenty of accolades for his work this season but he is also chasing a bit of program history. Morris has 113 strikeouts this season and is just 15 strikeouts away from tying Sergio Romo's single season record for strikeouts at 129. What is remarkable about the feat is Morris has 113 strikeouts in 71 and a third innings while Romo had the full allotment of games and made the mark with 124 and a third innings.

FOR STARTERS

The Mavericks starting pitchers have been fantastic this season. The group of four are a collective 29-1 with all of them having a 4.70 ERA or lower. The group pitched 244 out of a total of 380 and two-thirds innings and had a total of 334 strikeouts. All four pitchers (Morris, Day, Reynolds and Handy) finished in the top 85 pitchers in Division II baseball in total strikeouts.

THAT'S OFFENSIVE

Colorado Mesa has had one of the best offenses in college baseball at any level in 2021. They have the Division II lead in several categories including batting average (.378), doubles (142), hits (628), home runs (106) and runs (593).

They are on pace to break the single season team records in batting average which sits at .376 set in both 2009 and 2010. and are just nine home runs shy of that program record of 115 set in 1997.

SECOND HOME?

Foster Field at Angelo State has become somewhat a second home for the Mavericks. They have won a Regional Championship and a Super Regional Championship in their two trips to San Angelo. They are 6-1 in the seven total games they have played in at Foster Field going 4-0 during the six-team South Central Regional in 2017 and 2-1 during the 2019 Super Regional.

THE STREAK OF 40

Colorado Mesa enters the NCAA South Central Regional with a 41-5 record on the season. This marks the seventh straight season the Mavericks have won 40 or more games in a season. During the 2019 season, the Mavericks set a program record by winning 53 games on their way to a National Runner-up finish.

In head coach Chris Hanks' 23 seasons at the helm, there have only been eight seasons the Mavericks have failed to reach the 40 win mark.

THE SKIPPER

Colorado Mesa head coach Chris Hanks is in the dugout for his 23rd season as the skipper of the Mavericks. Hanks has an 939-365 record as the head coach and is the all-time wins leader in Colorado Mesa history as well as the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference.

He has led the Mavericks to 18 NCAA Regional Tournaments, four NCAA National Championship Tournament appearances and twice a National Runner-up. He has won the RMAC regular season championship 16 times and nine RMAC Tournament Championships.

900-WIN CLUB

On February 26, 2021, head baseball coach Chris Hanks won his 900th game as the skipper of the Colorado Mesa Mavericks. He is the tenth NCAA Division II coach to reach the milestone and his .720 winning is second among those with 900 wins only trailing Mike Kennison of Delta State who has a .758 winning percentage.

Coach Hanks is the all-time winningest baseball coach in program history and the all-time winningest baseball coach in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference history.
