GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – The top-ranked Colorado Mesa baseball team opened up the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Tournament with a 15-7 win over the Colorado Christian Cougars on Wednesday afternoon at Suplizio Field.
Colorado Mesa got the scoring going early but in a rather odd fashion. They scored two runs on no hits in the inning as they benefitted from a bases loaded walk and an infield RBI groundout by
Chase Hamilton to make it 2-0.
They opened it up in the second inning after scoring three runs in the frame and added three in the fourth, four in the fifth and three in the seventh.
Jordan Stubbings finished the game 2-for-4 with a run scored and four runs driven in. The junior delivered a two-run single in the fourth inning and an RBI single in the fifth. He also walked in the first inning to force across the first run of the game.
Haydn McGeary led the team with three hits in a 3-for-4 performance with three runs scored and two runs driven in. He had a two-run double in the second inning. It was his 22
nd double of the season.
Second baseman
Harrison Rodgers had just one hit in the game but it was a big one. Rodgers delivered a solo home run to right field that cleared three rows of cars in the parking lot. It was his ninth of the season and made it 9-0.
The Cougars, who are making their first-ever conference tournament appearance, mounted a valiant comeback in the latter innings. They scored two runs in the seventh and five runs in the eighth before going quietly in the ninth.
RMAC Pitcher of the Year
Andrew Morris was fantastic in his start. The sophomore allowed two runs on eight hits, walked one and struck out 12 in earning his ninth win of the season.
Colorado Mesa moves their overall record to 38-3 on the season while the Cougars fell to 13-27.
The Mavericks move on to play at 2pm tomorrow against the loser of tonight's matchup between fourth-seeded Regis and third-seeded UCCS.
