GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. –
Jordan Stubbings and
Johnny Carr provided the offense and
Andrew Morris provided the pitching in the Mavericks 4-1 victory over the Colorado Christian Cougars on Thursday evening at Suplizio Field in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference action.
Stubbings, the junior first baseman, delivered the first big hit of the game as he stepped to the plate in the bottom of the third inning. On the first pitch he saw, Stubbings deposited the baseball well beyond the mini monster in left field for a two-run homer to give the Mavericks a 2-0 lead at the time.
Colorado Christian got one back in the next half inning to make it 2-1.
In the bottom half of the inning, Carr got the first of his two hits on the night on a RBI single through the left side of the infield, bringing around
Harrison Rodgers. The ingle made it 3-1 in favor of Colorado Mesa.
The junior outfielder wasn't done on the night. In the bottom half of the sixth inning, Carr sent an 0-1 pitch over the fence in left field for his first home run of the season. The home run gave the Mavericks some insurance, making it a 4-1 game.
The four runs would be all staff ace
Andrew Morris would need. Morris pitched eight innings and allowed one run (unearned) on five hits, walked none and struck out 13 which moved his season record to 8-0 on the season.
The 13 strikeouts gave Morris six starts this season with more than 10 strikeouts and pushes his season total above 100.
Senior
Trevin Reynolds pitched the final inning of the game and recorded two strikeouts to pick up his first save of the season.
The top-ranked Mavericks (34-3) and Cougars will be back in action tomorrow for a twilight doubleheader that will begin at 3:30pm at Suplizio Field.
