Andrew Morris was nearly unhittable on Friday night at Suplizio Field. Morris carried a no-hitter into the eighth inning before an infield single broke it up. The Mavericks went onto a 15-3 win over No. 19 MSU Denver in the series opener in a key RMAC matchup.
The Boulder, Colo. native allowed no runs on just the one hit, walked four and struck out 15 Roadrunners on the night. Morris had a string of 10 straight retired batters via the strikeout.
With the performance, he lowered his season ERA to 1.93 and now has a Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference leading 68 strikeouts. After surrendering his lone hit allowed in the eighth inning, he exited to a standing ovation by the 2,238 fans in attendance.
With Morris' pitching the Maverick offense didn't need to give the young ace much support but decided to pound out 15 runs on 12 hits.
Caleb Farmer laced a groundball up the middle to score
Spencer Bramwell for the game's first run and the Mavericks never looked back. Farmer finished the night 2-for-4 with a triple two runs scored and four runs driven in.
Fresh off an injury
Matthew Turner stepped back into the No. 2 spot in the order and delivered. Turner hit his team-leading 10
th home run of the season in the bottom of the fourth inning. He finished the night going 3-for-4 with four runs driven in.
Colorado Mesa improved to 19-2 overall on the season and 16-1 in the conference while the Roadrunners fell to 21-4 and 17-4 in the RMAC.
The two teams will play a doubleheader tomorrow afternoon beginning at 1pm at Suplizio Field.
