GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – The top-ranked Colorado Mesa baseball team earned the doubleheader sweep after a pair of come-from-behind victories over the visiting MSU Denver Raodrunners on Saturday at Suplizio Field in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference action.
In game one of the day,
Ryan Day allowed four runs on four hits and staked the Roadrunners to a 4-0 lead. Day allowed only one more hit in five innings of work and the Mavericks gave him plenty of offense in a 14-4 win.
The Prosper, Texas native's final line was four runs on five hits, walked one and striking out five. The win pushes Day's record to 5-0 on the season.
Day gave way to reliever
Jared Ure who pitched the final two innings of the game and allowed just two walks while striking out three.
Jordan Stubbings paced the Maverick offense with a 3-for-3 performance. The COVID junior had three runs scored and three runs driven in while hitting his sixth home run of the season.
Colorado Mesa got good production out of the nine-hole in
Jonathan Gonzalez. The Brawley, Calif. native went 2-for-3 with one run and three runs driven in.
The Mavericks took the lead in the bottom of the fourth inning on a pinch-hit RBI double from
Wacy Crenshaw and never looked back. They scored two in the fourth and tacked on nine more in the fifth.
On the back end of the doubleheader, all nine Mavericks in the batting order recorded at least one hit and came from behind for the second time today in a 7-4 win over the Roadrunners.
The Mavericks took a 2-0 lead early in the first inning after RBI singles from
Haydn McGeary and
Spencer Bramwell but fell behind 4-2 after three and a half innings of play.
Colorado Mesa scored three in the fourth and two in the fifth to take the 7-4 advantage. The big blow in the fourth inning off the hot bat of
Jordan Stubbings. The COVID junior first baseman ripped a 1-0 pitch over the Clark Auto sign in left center field for a two-run homer, his seventh of the season.
The mini-Murder's Row of
Matthew Turner, McGeary and Stubbings each had multiple hits in the game. McGeary finished 3-for-4 to lead the team in hits.
Trevin Reynolds got the start in game three and didn't have his best stuff but found a way to win and pick up his fifth win of the season. Reynolds allowed four runs on six hits, walked four and struck out five while flashing 97mph on his fastball in the first inning on the stadium radar gun.
Anthony Durbano earned the save after retiring the final two batters of the game after inducing a 4-6-3 double play on a Roadrunner pinch-hitter.
Colorado Mesa improves to 21-2 on the season and 18-1 in the conference while the Roadrunners fall to 21-6, 17-6 in the RMAC.
The two teams will conclude the series on Sunday with a single nine-inning game beginning at 12pm.
