GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – The Colorado Mesa (3-0-1, 3-0-1 RMAC) men's soccer team picked up their third straight win, yet again in shutout fashion, defeating MSU Denver, 2-0 in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference play on Maverick Field Thursday afternoon.
The Roadrunners could not seem to get past the Mavericks defense, taking all of three shots on the day and not a single shot taken towards the goal frame. The Mavericks on the other hand were relentless on offense, taking 14 shots, half of which were on goal.
Lone senior,
Brendan Brown was honored prior to the game and did not see much action in goal with his teammates keeping the ball on the opposite end of the field.
Aaron Martinez and
Leo Mireles took three shots a piece, with one of Mireles finding the twine for his first goal of the season.
Just five minutes into the game, MSU Denver's Nick Jansen sent a goal kick towards midfield only to have it intercepted and taken back towards his box.
Daisuke Takanaka passed it up to
Gabriel Peres who dribbled into scoring territory and a sprinting Takanaka who cut back and slid into his shot that found the top right corner for his second goal of the season.
Just before the half let out,
Ethan Anderson crossed it over to an awaiting Mireles who headed it past Jansen for the Mavs 2-0 score. Anderson's assist was his fourth of the season.
Jansen made four of his five saves in the second half, to keep the score knotted at 2-0 but could only do so much with his team unable to score themselves.
UP NEXT: The Mavericks will close out the regular season on the road, setting up a rematch with Westminster Sunday on Dumke Field.
