DURANGO, Colo. – The No. 25 Colorado Mesa women's lacrosse team found themselves down early, but rallied to net 10 unanswered points, leading to an eventual 19-11 victory over Fort Lewis to remain unscathed in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference play.
Kiley Davis continues to pilot the Mavs scoring efforts, producing a new season high five goals, to go along with a ground ball and a caused turnover.
Lauren Wick followed up with four goals and an assist.
Ashton Whittle did a little bit of everything, with two goals, three ground balls, two caused turnovers, and six draw controls.
Adelaine Charlsen picked up her second straight win defending the goal, bagging eight saves and four ground balls on the day.
HOW IT HAPPENED
A series of yellow cards against Maverick players gave the Skyhawks multiple man-up possessions that they would take full advantage of. They would go on a 6-0 run in the first ten minutes of play, forcing CMU to make up for lost time.
Shortly after FLC scored their sixth goal,
Elizabeth Renken ended the scoring drought and sparked a 10-0 run, with CMU taking over the game and leading 10-6 at the break.
Regan Wentz opened the second half with her tenth goal of the season, giving way to a couple more goals by Wick and Whittle for the 13-6 edge. The Skyhawks would answer with three more goals of their own to pull within four.
The home team would score only twice more in the second half, but could not compete with the 9-5 scoring difference and saw the Skyhawks fast start disappear.
The two teams will meet again towards the end of the month, this time the Skyhawks making their way to Maverick Field in Grand Junction for a rematch. Between now and then though, Colorado Mesa will prepare for a matchup with the Mountain Lions of UCCS on Sunday Apr. 11.
