GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – The No. 24 Colorado Mesa (7-4, 6-1 RMAC) women's lacrosse team battled, but could not contain the No. 10 Regis attack, suffering their first conference loss Wednesday on Maverick Field.
The Mavericks doubled their score total from the first meeting, but Regis put together 11 goals in the first half on their way to 19-4 triumph. As a team the Mavericks trailed just 10-to-15 in draw controls, 19-20 in ground balls and finished 11-of-13 in clears.
Ashton Whittle strung together three draw controls and a goal to lead the team's efforts.
Regan Wentz,
Madison Navarro and
Melanie Evans were behind the team's other scores.
Lula Mitchell and
Adelaine Charlsen traded goalkeeper duties, each picking up a pair of saves.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Jessica Berg scored in the second minute of play, opening up a 5-0 scoring run by the Rangers. Following a couple of missed opportunities, the Maverick's
Regan Wentz found the back of the net with the help of
Elizabeth Renken, putting an end to the scoring streak.
Just before the half closed, the duo of Evans and
Peyton Ivey scored to give CMU their second goal of the game.
Despite trailing, the Maverick defense put the pressure on and caused turnovers, forcing Regis out of system on a number of possessions. Towards the latter part of the second half, Whittle found and open lane right down the middle taking it all the way and converting on her 18
th goal of the season.
Drawing contact in the arc, Navarro would take shot from her free-position setup tallying the team's fourth goal, her third of the season.
