Mavs Earn Season Sweep over Skyhawks

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – The No. 24 Colorado Mesa (6-3, 5-0 RMAC) women's lacrosse team continued their winning ways, earning their fifth straight win with 19-8 decision over Fort Lewis, Sunday afternoon on Maverick Field.

After trading points for the first 20-minutes of the opening frame, the Mavericks used an 8-0 run to pull in front 15-6. CMU would add four goals in the second half, while keeping the Skyhawks to just two.

The Mavs outshot the Skyhawks, 35-21 and were led by a four-goal performance from Taylor Jakeman. Ashton Whittle, Kiley Davis and Lauren Wick each added three-goals each, with Regan Wentz and Melanie Evans combining for seven assists.

Adelaine Charlsen picked up the decision in goal, moving her to 3-0 on the season, recording just a single save but came in to aid in Mavericks 8-0 run.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Fort Lewis drew blood first in the opening minute of play, but Colorado Mesa's Lauren Wick would respond shortly after to tie things up.

Behind goals from Wick, Jakeman and Melanie Evans the Mavericks would go up by three. Fort Lewis would score twice in the same minute, and then again just under the 18-minute mark to knot things up at five. The Skyhawks would score again at 14:26, but would be last goal of the half and the Mavericks took over.

Wentz was the start of her team's scoring run, with Kiley Davis capping off the half on a free-position shot.

With the 10-point difference, the clock would run throughout the second half with Jakeman and Ashton Whittle picking up their 17th goals of the season within the first 15-minutes.

The Skyhawks scored twice under the 6-minute mark, but could not overcome the deficit, giving the Mavericks the season sweep.

UP NEXT
The team will prepare for a tough test against No. 12 ranked Regis on Wednesday April 28, finally getting a second shot against the Rangers after rescheduling their original conference matchup.

It will also mark the final regular season home game for the Mavericks, but could determine if they host the conference tournament and earn a regular season title.
