GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – The top-ranked Colorado Mesa baseball team ran their win streak to 15 games as they swept a doubleheader from the New Mexico Highlands Cowboys on Saturday in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference action.
In game one,
Ryan Day pitched a complete game shutout to lead the Mavericks to a 13-0 win over the Cowboys. Day allowed just three hits and struck out a career-high 15 strikeouts. He retired the first 11 batters he faced with nine coming via the strikeout.
The win moves Day's record to 6-0 on the season and he lowered his season ERA to 3.13.
At the plate,
Caleb Farmer led the way with a 2-for-3 performance with two runs scored and three runs driven in. He hit his fourth home run of the season in the bottom of the fourth inning, a no-doubt, three-run shot to left field.
Outfielder
Matthew Turner got the scoring going in the bottom of the first with a solo home run to left field. It was his team-leading 12
th round tripper of the season.
Haydn McGeary added to his home run total with a three-run blast in the bottom of the second.
In the night cap,
Wacy Crenshaw's go-ahead hit in the bottom of the sixth inning helped the Mavericks to a 9-8 win that clinched the series with Highlands.
The two teams were locked in a battle from the first pitch with each team taking leads throughout the first three innings of action.
Crenshaw made the most of his second start of the season as he finished the game 2-for-3 with two runs scored and the big RBI.
McGeary had another big game at the plate as he went 3-for-4 with two doubles, with a run scored and three runs driven in. His 17 doubles on the season rank second nationally and now leads the RMAC in total hits with 55.
Jordan Stubbings,
Harrison Rodgers, and Farmer all had a multi-hit game in the night cap also.
Reliever
Anthony Durbano picked up his third win of the season in relief of starter
Trevin Reynolds.
Gage Edwards earned his first save of the season after recording the final two outs of the game earning a strikeout of the final batter.
Colorado Mesa and New Mexico Highlands will conclude their series with a single nine-inning game beginning at noon from Suplizio Field.
**Schedule Update: The doubleheader between Colorado Mesa and Regis scheduled for Tuesday will now take place on Monday at 12pm from Denver. Weather is expected to hit the Front Range on Tuesday and in an effort to get all games in the two teams agreed to move up a day.
