GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – The No. 1 Colorado Mesa baseball team continues to score runs in bunches and they did it again on Friday night at Suplizio Field in a 20-1 victory over the visiting New Mexico Highlands Cowboys in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference action.
The Mavericks are averaging nearly 15 runs a game this season which is the top mark in the country. Tonight, they scored 20 runs on 16 hits and benefitted from 11 walks issued by the Highlands pitching staff.
Spencer Bramwell was one of those players for the Mavericks that was seeing the ball well tonight. The junior catcher was 3-for-3 with four runs scored and five runs driven in. He hit the first of two home runs in the first inning, a three-run shot to right field to give the Mavericks a 3-0 lead. His second came in the third inning, a two-run shot to center field for his ninth round tripper of the season.
Tanner Garner and
Caleb Farmer each hit home runs in the win as well.
Maverick starter
Andrew Morris didn't need that much run support as he earned his sixth win of the season. Morris allowed one run on four hits, walked one and struck out ten after throwing 106 pitches in six innings of work. The ten strikeouts gave him five of his eight outings with ten or more punchouts.
Jared Ure turned in one of his best outings of the season as he pitched three shutout innings of relief to earn the rule book save.
The duo combined to retire 12 in a row and 15-of-16 batters in a stretch from the third inning to the eighth inning.
Colorado Mesa has now won 13 games in a row and improved the 25-2 on the season, 22-1 in the RMAC.
The two teams will continue the series tomorrow with a doubleheader beginning at 1pm from Suplizio Field.
