Maverick women drop season-finale

Mavs take doubles point for second straight day but fall to Vulcans, 4-2

SURPRISE, Ariz.— The Colorado Mesa University women's tennis team's 2021 season ended on a heart-breaking note on Thursday evening as the Mavericks were downed, 4-2 by the University of Hawai'i Hilo Vulcans in a consolation match at the Pacific West Conference Championships.

The tenth-seeded Mavericks won the doubles point for the second straight day at the conference tournament, being played here at the Surprise Tennis Center, but dropped a pair of 3-set singles matches against the eighth-seeded Vulcans, who close out their season with an 8-6 record.

The Mavericks finished their first season as affiliate members of the PacWest with a 12-13 overall mark.

In doubles, Maike Waldburger and Carolena Campos were 6-1 winners over Carolina Alfonsin and Hannah Highsmith at No. 1.  Issy Coman and Halle Romero then claimed a 6-3 win over the Vulcans' Carmelle Joyner and Casydee De Mattos at No. 2 allowing the Mavericks to clinch the doubles point.

The No. 3 doubles affair was tied at 5 and was left unfinished.

Play then turned to singles as Maverick freshman Julianna Campos blitzed De Mattos, 6-0, 6-1 at No. 6 singles to give the Mavericks a 2-0 team lead.

However, the Vulcans roared back with straight set wins at No. 3 and No. 5 singles before Sandra Dafincescu bounced back from a first-set defeat to take down Waldburger, 2-6, 7-5, 6-2 at No. 2 singles.

Joyner also batted for a 6-1, 4-6, 6-1 victory over CMU fifth-year senior Carolena Campos, who recorded 49 total career victories, at No. 4 singles to seal the Vulcans' victory.

Meanwhile, Coman was leading the third set of her No. 1 singles affair with the Vulcans' Hikari Osaki, 3-0 when it was called off after the Vulcans clinched the team win.
