Senior Day Sweep

Mavs claim convincing 7-0, 6-1 wins to finish regular season with winning record

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo.— Carolena Campos and Alexi Klabunde combined for five wins as they were recognized on Colorado Mesa University's Women's Tennis Senior Day while helping the Mavericks to a pair of convincing wins on Saturday here at the Elliott Tennis Center.

The Mavericks dropped just nine total games in a 7-0 drubbing of short-handed CSU Pueblo in the morning before claiming a 6-1 win over Colorado College for the second straight Saturday in the afternoon as the Mavs wrapped up the regular season with a winning 12-11 overall record.

Campos, a fifth-year Maverick senior, won both of her No. 1 doubles matches with Maike Waldburger and split her singles matches while Klabunde, a fourth-year redshirt junior, won at No. 5 singles against Colorado College's Olivia Dicks after receiving a No. 6 singles default win against CSU Pueblo, which fielded a lineup of just five players while falling to 0-7 on the year.

The ThunderWolves did not win more than one game in any of the sets.

Colorado College dropped to 2-6 with the afternoon loss to the Mavericks.

Campos, now just two wins shy of 50 in her career, and Klabunde were recognized in between the matches along with 2020 Maverick senior Kristen Kirby, who had her senior season and brilliant Maverick career cut short by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Meanwhile, Campos' freshman sister Julianna, Waldburger and Lauren Thomas all went 4-0 throughout the day as the Mavericks claimed their fourth and fifth wins in the last eight days, four of which have come against the ThunderWolves and Tigers.

Waldburger and Carolena Campos won both of their doubles matches, 6-1.  Waldburger was also a 6-1, 6-1 winner over CSU Pueblo's Katherine Ambrose and a 6-4, 6-4 victor over CC's Keelie Bennett in the No. 1 singles position as Issy Coman sat out of the lineup due to injury.

Thomas and Julianna Campos won their No. 3 doubles match against CSU Pueblo by default and then took down CC's Malia Rivera and Gigi Jensen, 6-2 as the Mavericks went a combined 5-1 in doubles during the day.

Thomas also defeated Alyssa Wells of CSU Pueblo, 6-0, 6-1 at No. 4 and then moved up to the No. 3 singles flight to score a 7-5, 6-4 win over Jensen in the afternoon.

Julianna Campos was a 6-1, 6-1 winner over CSU Pueblo's Sonrisa Bustamante at No. 5 before sliding into the No. 4 position to claim a 7-5, 6-3 win over the CC's Elizabeth Girian.

CMU's Kira Coffee also claimed her first win as a Maverick as she completed the day with a hard-fought No. 6 singles win over the Tigers' Katherine Beard.  Coffee came from behind to win, 3-6, 7-6 (7-4), 10-8.

The Mavericks will now await their seeding and first round opponent for their first-ever PacWest Tournament appearance.  That tournament begins Wednesday in Surprise, Arizona.
