COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo.— Colorado Mesa University redshirt sophomore
Maike Waldburger moved past the 50-career win mark as she helped the Maverick women's tennis team to a pair of victories on Saturday here at Memorial Park. The Mavericks snapped a 4-match losing streak with a 7-0 neutral-court win over Austin College in the morning before claiming a 6-1 win over the host Colorado College Tigers in the afternoon.
The victories allowed the Mavericks to improve to 9-10 overall this season. The Kangaroos dropped to 3-6 while the Tigers fell to 1-4.
Waldburger, who had been stuck on 48 career wins after going without a victory during CMU's last four duals, three of which had come against Division I foes, dropped just four total games in her two No. 2 singles matches throughout the day. She claimed her milestone victory by a 6-2, 6-1 margin over the Kangaroos' Phoebe Shapard. The German then defeated CC's Magdalene Gonzales by a 6-1, 6-0 margin to win her 26th career singles and 52
nd overall match.
Waldburger also teamed with senior
Carolena Campos, who now has 43 career wins, for a pair of No. 1 doubles victories during the day as the Mavericks swept the doubles affairs in both duals.
Against the 'Roos, Campos and Waldburger defeated Gigi Francis and Phoebe Shapard, 6-4 after
Issy Coman and
Halle Romero and
Lauren Thomas and
Julianna Campos both scored 6-0 wins in the second and third flights, respectively.
In singles play, the Mavericks combined for five bagel set wins as Romero and
Julianna Campos both scored 6-0, 6-0 wins at No. 3 and No. 6 singes, respectively.
Lauren Thomas then clinched the team win for the Mavs with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Austin College's Sierra Thomas.
Carolena Campos then added a 6-0, 6-1 win over Megan Morris at No. 4 singles before Waldburger and Coman, who won 6-4, 6-1 over Francis in the top flight, completed the sweep.
The Mavericks were pressed a bit more by the host Tigers, although the Mavericks cruised through doubles play with 6-2, 6-1, and 6-3 victories in the three matches.
In singles, Waldburger and
Julianna Campos were the first two victors. Campos defeated Haley Caspersen, 6-0, 6-2 at No. 6 before Romero posted a 6-2, 6-0 win over Gigi Jensen at No. 3 to clinch the dual.
Carolena Campos, a 6-2, 6-3 victor over Malia Rivera at No. 4 then gave the Mavericks a 5-0 lead before the Tigers scored their only team point through Elizabeth Girian at No. 5 . Meanwhile, Coman battled for a No. 1 singles win over Keelie Bennett, which came by a 6-4, 4-6, 1-0 (10-4) margin to complete her 4-0 day.
