Mavericks drill ThunderWolves for third straight win

CMU claims tenth win of 2021 by 7-0 margin

PUEBLO, Colo.— Halle Romero and the Campos sisters all lost just two games as they led the Colorado Mesa University Maverick women's tennis team to a dominant 7-0 road victory over in-state rival CSU Pueblo on Sunday morning here at Pueblo City Park.  The victory was CMU's third in a span of just 24 hours as the Mavericks evened their overall record at 10-10.

CSU Pueblo, which won just one set, fell to 0-6.

The Mavericks lost just two combined games in the three doubles matches as Carolena Campos teamed with Maike Waldburger for a 6-1 win over Kali Hamilton and Sabina de la Vega in the top flight while Romero and CMU freshman Issy Coman, blanked Katherine Ambrose and Alyssa Wells at No. 2.

Julianna Campos and Lauren Thomas were also 6-1 winners over Roma Cordova and Sonrisa Bustamante in the No. 3 doubles match, which was the first to be completed.

The Mavericks then continued to dominate in singles play.

Julianna Campos was the first to win as she won, 6-1, 6-0 over Bustamante at No. 6 singles before Romero completed a 6-1, 6-1 win over de la Vega at No. 3.  Carolena Campos then clinched the dual with a 6-0, 6-1 win over Cordova at No. 4.

Waldburger had an equally easy 6-0, 6-1 win over Ambrose at No. 2 singles while Coman fought for a 6-2, 7-5 win over Hamilton at No. 1 singles.

Thomas needed three sets but eventually prevailed at No. 5 singles as she bested Wells 10-6 in a tie-breaker after splitting the first two sets, 6-2, 3-6.

The Mavericks will play the ThunderWolves again next Saturday at 9:30 a.m. when they host them at the Elliott Tennis Center as the middle match of a 3-match weekend.  CMU also plays PacWest Conference foe MSU Denver on Friday at 1 p.m. before concluding the regular season with a 2:30 p.m. Saturday affair against Colorado College, a team the Mavericks defeated 6-1 yesterday in Colorado Springs.

Senior Day festivities will be held at 1:15 p.m. before warm-ups for that match-up.
