#RUMBLEMavs Men's Basketball Back-to-Back Tournament Champions

Colorado Mesa outlasts Colorado School of Mines 75-74, in overtime for second straight title

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – Back-to-back tournament champions!

For those who weren't tuned in to Saturday night's Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference tournament championship match, you missed out. In an overtime thriller, No. 4 Colorado Mesa outlasted Colorado School of Mines 75-74, to grab back-to-back tournament titles.

The Mavericks are a perfect 6-0 in overtime periods, and finish a perfect 11-0 at home with the rest of the season being on the road. Oh, and they are 10-1 in that category too, for a 21-1 overall record so far this season.

Each team knocked down 29-field goals, with the Mavericks holding a slight edge in 3-pointers (8-6) and rebounds (33-30). The CMU defense came up with some big stops when it mattered most, racking up 10-blocks as a team, one of which came at the end of regulation to force extra minutes.

CMU opened the game on an 8-0 run, scoring back-to-back 3-pointers. After maintaining a slight lead, the Orediggers tied it up at 15 after converting off a CMU turnover. The teams traded baskets for a majority of half, but the Mavs stayed in front, going up by eight thanks to a three from Reece Johnson to close out the first half.

The Orediggers started flowing in the second half, and held a 4-point lead with a 1:30 left to play. A pair of free throws from Georgie Dancer pulled them within three. Mines then committed a 5-second turnover, and gave Mesa the possession.

Jared Small from way beyond the arc, knocked down a game tying three, and Dancer followed up with a block on the opposite end of the court to send the game into extra minutes.

Ethan Menzies struck first in the overtime period, grabbing the offensive rebound and putting it back for the second chance points.

Yet again, Small knocked in both free throw attempts for a 75-73 lead. The Orediggers had a chance to tie it up but missed one of their free throws to knot it at 75-74.

The Orediggers Kobi Betts chucked up a last chance shot but would miss wide, as the Mavs grabbed the defensive rebound and the win.

Colorado Mesa landed four on the All-Tournament team, led by Ethan Menzies who earned Tournament MVP. He finished with a game-high 23-points, along with seven rebounds and three blocks.

Georgie Dancer, Jared Small and Mac Riniker joined Menzies as all-tournament recipients. Dancer contributed 18-points and Small chipped in 13, going 3-for-3 from deep. Riniker pulled down five rebounds in Saturday's win, and played a key role in the Mavs win over Adams State the night prior, to send his team to the championship.

The team will await their seeding for next week's NCAA Division II West Regional tournament in Golden, Colo. The field will be announced Sunday night.
