Mavs drop PacWest opener to No. 25 Eagles

CMU to play two more on Saturday in SoCal

IRVINE, Calif.— The Colorado Mesa University women's tennis team found out how tough the Pacific West Conference will be as the Mavericks were downed 5-0 in their conference opener by 25th-ranked Concordia University-Irvine on Friday afternoon here at the Eagles' on-campus courts.

The Mavericks, now 6-3, were unable to win a set although Julianna Campos and Lauren Thomas took Alyssa Zayat and Heather Richards to a tie-breaker at No. 3 doubles before going down 7-3 in the breaker.

In singles play, Carolena Campos and Thomas fared best.  Campos dropped a 6-3, 6-1 decision to Camila Tumosa at No. 3 while Thomas took three games off Richards in the opening set of the No. 5 match before the rest of the match went unfinished as the Eagles clinched the victory, which upped their record to 3-1 overall.

The Mavericks will play two more PacWest matches in southern California on Saturday facing No. 11 Azusa Pacific at 9:30 a.m. Pacific (10:30 Mountain) in Azusa before wrapping up the weekend at 3:30 p.m. Pacific (4:30 Mountain) at Biola in LaMirada.
