IRVINE, Calif.— The Colorado Mesa University women's tennis team found out how tough the Pacific West Conference will be as the Mavericks were downed 5-0 in their conference opener by 25
th-ranked Concordia University-Irvine on Friday afternoon here at the Eagles' on-campus courts.
The Mavericks, now 6-3, were unable to win a set although
Julianna Campos and
Lauren Thomas took Alyssa Zayat and Heather Richards to a tie-breaker at No. 3 doubles before going down 7-3 in the breaker.
In singles play,
Carolena Campos and Thomas fared best. Campos dropped a 6-3, 6-1 decision to Camila Tumosa at No. 3 while Thomas took three games off Richards in the opening set of the No. 5 match before the rest of the match went unfinished as the Eagles clinched the victory, which upped their record to 3-1 overall.
The Mavericks will play two more PacWest matches in southern California on Saturday facing No. 11 Azusa Pacific at 9:30 a.m. Pacific (10:30 Mountain) in Azusa before wrapping up the weekend at 3:30 p.m. Pacific (4:30 Mountain) at Biola in LaMirada.
