Mavericks Earn 3-0 Shutout over Black Hills

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – Conference play continued for the Colorado Mesa women's soccer team Sunday, as fans got to witness a dominant 3-0 win by the Mavericks over Black Hills State. The team picks up their third win of the season, all of which have come in shutout fashion.

The Mavericks were dominant across the board, taking a total of 26 shots – 12 of which were on-target, all while keeping the Yellowjackets out of attacking territory and not a single shot attempt taken. Their 15 corner kicks also marked a season high.

Lila Dere was behind two of the team's three goals, while Tallin Nieman registered her first goal of the season to complete the team's hat trick. Emily Signorio recorded all 90 minutes in the goal, but saw little to no action in the back half of the field as the front line kept the ball in Yellowjacket territory.

Dere's first goal of the game came just two minutes into play, connecting with Carli Dare, to place one past the Black Hills goalkeeper. Dere had another opportunity minutes later but was the Dz-Rae Jara came up with a big save for her team to keep it knotted at one.

On the offense, the Mavericks shots continued throughout the first half making the opposing defense work. In the final two minutes of the half, off a corner kick Tallin Nieman snuck one into the bottom left corner of the net, amidst a scramble, for the team's second score of the afternoon.

Yet again in the opening minutes of the second half, Paige Vogel crossed the ball from the left side of the field, to an open Dere who placed the ball perfectly past the Yellowjackets last line of defense for the 3-0 edge.

The remainder of the half saw the Mavericks keep the pressure on, while also limiting their opponents attack.

Dere's goals matched her season high, and have now made it three consecutive games where she's found the back of the net.

Riding high, the team will have some big road tests next weekend as they head over to Regis and UCCS to kick off April's portion of the conference schedule.
