GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – Behind a season high 18-goals, the Colorado Mesa women's lacrosse team used a big first half to secure a 18-11 conference win over the visiting Westminster Griffins Saturday afternoon on Maverick Field.
Kiley Davis was the offensive commander putting up a season-high four goals to lead the team.
Melanie Evans and
Taylor Jakeman also finished with hat-trickson the day. Four different Mavs tallied two assists to aid in the scoring efforts.
The Mavericks caused 10 turnovers, picked up 28 ground balls, and held a 17-14 edge in draw controls.
A quick turnover by the Griffins allowed Davis to take it all the way, finding the back of the net for the first score of the game. However, Audree Erekson would convert off a free-position opportunity to tie it up.
It was a back and forth affair between the teams, until the clock ran under ten and
Ashton Whittle used a free-position opportunity, despite being a man down to give the team a three-point edge.
With 16-seconds left in the first half,
Taylor Jakeman put in her fourth goal of the season, and then Davis added another goal to her game and season total with just five seconds remaining to give her team the upper hand, 10-6.
It took a couple of minutes into the first half for either team to score, but
Lauren Wick put an end to that at 27:31 for the 11-6 lead.
The remainder of the game stayed in favor of the home team as they continued to build their lead. Evans and Jakeman capped off the scoring for the game with the final two goals, extending the teams lead to the final 18-11 score.
Conference play continues for women's lacrosse when the Adams State Grizzlies come to Grand Junction on Thursday, April 1.
