GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – The Colorado Mesa baseball team came away with a 6-3 win over the Regis Rangers in a pitcher's dual on the first day of a Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference pod at Suplizio Field.
Andrew Morris took the ball for the Mavericks and was nearly unhittable as he allowed just four hits through seven innings of work. In the eighth inning, he surrendered a hit and was pulled after getting the first out of the inning. Reliever
Anthony Durbano was able to get out of the jam.
Morris' final line was seven and a third innings allowing three runs (two earned) on five hits, walked four and struck out 10 while throwing 118 pitches in earning his third win of the season. Durbano combined with closer
Frankie Fitzgerald to pitch the final inning of a third of scoreless baseball as Fitzgerald earned his second save of the season.
Regis' Justin Kleinsorge was nearly unhittable as well as he allowed five runs (one earned) on six hits, walked one and struck out 11 in six innings of work. The big righty didn't get a lot of help from his defense as the Rangers committed five errors in the game.
With two strong pitching performances on both sides of the field, hitting superlatives were hard to come by. Second baseman
Jonathan Gonzalez didn't seem to have too many problems as he finished the game 2-for-4 with two RBIs that included a clutch RBI in the eighth inning that gave the Mavericks an insurance run.
Caleb Farmer and
Tyler Parker were the only other Mavericks with multiple hits in the game as each had two hits with a double.
Colorado Mesa improved to 13-2 on the season and 10-1 in RMAC play while the Rangers fall to 15-3, 11-3 in conference action.
The Mavericks will take on the Adams State Grizzlies tomorrow afternoon at 3:30pm at Suplizio Field in day two of the RMAC pod.
