GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – Colorado Mesa's
Haydn McGeary hit for the cycle to help lead the No. 2 Mavericks to a 25-2 win over the Adams State Grizzlies in the second day of a Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference pod at Suplizio Field.
McGeary picked up a home run in the first inning, a two-run shot that gave the Mavericks the early 2-0 lead. Later in the inning, he double bringing in
Tyler Parker and
Chase Hamilton to push the Maverick lead to 9-0 still in the first inning.
He singled to lead off the third inning and in his final at bat of the day, the Peoria, Ar.z native ripped a shot to left center and trucked all the way around to third base to complete the cycle. He finished the day 4-for-4 with a walk, three runs scored and seven runs driven in.
The Mavericks pounded out 21 hits with 11 of those going for extra bases.
McGeary and replacement
Nolan Walker were the lone two Mavericks with home runs. Walker finished the game 2-for-5 with a triple, two runs scored and two runs driven in.
The Maverick pitching staff was outstanding in the win as they finished the game with 22 strikeouts out of the 27 total outs in the game.
Starter
Trevin Reynolds pitched the first five innings and allowed two runs (one earned) on two hits, walked three and struck out 11. He got the first hitter of the game on a groundball out then proceeded to retire the next seven outs all by the strikeout.
Jared Ure,
Gage Edwards, and
Austin Lorenz combined to pitch the final four innings and allowed just two hits with 11 strikeouts. Ure and Lorenz each threw one inning and struck out all three batters they faced.
The Mavericks will close out the pod weekend tomorrow with a doubleheader beginning at 12pm. They will play host to Adams State prior to a matchup with the Regis Rangers.
