COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo.— Colorado Mesa University volleyball players
Kerstin Layman and
Sabrina VanDeList were named as the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Defensive Player and Setter of the Week, respectively, it was announced by conference officials on Monday afternoon.
The honors come after the RMAC-leading and nation's second-ranked Mavericks recorded a trio of 3-set sweeps last week to improve to 12-0 on the season.
Layman recorded 44 digs (4.89/set) and made just one reception error in 47 attempts (.979) while anchoring a Maverick defense, which held opponents to a combined .073 attack percentage in last week's wins. The Littleton, Colorado native and Columbine High School product had 15 digs and two service aces in Wednesday's win over Westminster and then had a season-high 22 digs as well as six assists in a Friday evening win against Adams State, leading all players for digs in both matches. The junior libero also had seven digs and three assists in a quick Friday afternoon win over Black Hills State.
VanDeList recorded two more double-doubles, her fourth and fifth of her freshman campaign, as she recorded 55 assists (6.11/set) and 29 digs (3.22/set) while helping run CMU's 6-2 offense. The Severance, Colorado native and Fort Collins High School product had 18 assists and 11 digs in CMU's Wednesday home win over Westminster before finishing with 14 assists and seven digs against Black Hills State on Friday afternoon. She then completed the weekend with 23 assists and 11 digs against Adams State. VanDeList also had a career-high three service aces against Adams State and had five (0.55/set) throughout the week.
The Mavericks will resume their season on Saturday playing at Western Colorado University in Gunnison at 3 p.m.
