GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – Back on their home turf, the Westminster (2-0-2, 1-0 RMAC) Griffins spoiled the Colorado Mesa (2-2-1, 0-1 RMAC) women's soccer conference opener scoring a golden goal in the second overtime period for a 2-1 final in favor of the Griffins.
The Griffins held a 20-17 edge in shots, and 7-5 in saves. The Mavericks continued to create opportunities getting to the corner, holding a slight 6-5 advantage over the Griffins.
Alexa Maple gave the Griffins the upper hand, scoring in the 27
th minute. The Mavericks had a number of good looks, but weren't able to convert. It wasn't until the final minute of the first half, did Lile Dere draw the foul in the box setting up a penalty kick and chance to tie it up.
A low scorcher to the right side of the goal, gave Dere her third goal of the season and a tie score going into the break.
As regulation came to an end, the teams headed into overtime to decide a score.
Westminster amped up the pressure, and gave the Maverick defense a lot of action. After being scoreless in the first period, the Griffins offensive pressure paid off as a pass across the box found Westminster's Aimee Kurfurst who send it past
Emily Signorio for the final goal, and 2-1 final score.
Chloe Dody picked up two saves in the first half before being relieved of duties in the second half by Signorio who finished out the game and picked up a save.
The team will head to Durango Friday for a rematch with the Skyhawks of Fort Lewis, and then return home to Maverick Field to host Black Hills State to continue conference play.
