St. Charles, Mo. -- The No. 25 Colorado Mesa women's lacrosse team (1-2, 0-0 RMAC) took an early lead, but couldn't hold on for the win over No. 2 Lindenwood in St. Charles, Mo, falling 18-13.
Although they didn't come out on top, they are just the second team to score double-figure goals on the Lions. Regis was the other, who scored 10 goals on Feb. 27. The three other teams Lindenwood has faced only put together a combined 9-goals against them.
Lula Mitchell came up with 16 saves on the day, as the Lions took 34 shots on goal.Â
Lauren Wick helped her team to an early 2-0 lead, and then
Ashton Whittle picked up her first goal of the day to push the team to 3-1. The Lion attack would then go on to score six unanswered goals to put them at 7-3.
Just as the teams headed into the half time break, the Mavs netted three more goals to cut into the deficit and trail 9-6, two from
Kiley Davis and the other from
Regan Wentz.
Lindenwood would come out firing the second half, tacking on four more goals to increase their lead. The Maverick offense scored in spurts throughout the second half, and found themselves on a 4-0 run later in the second half but could not complete the comeback.
Whittle, Davis and Wick each tallied three goals to lead the offensive efforts. Whittle also, scooped up a ground ball and handled nine draw controls.
Nici Boutwell did a little bit of everything, recording a goal, and assist while also picking up four ground balls, causing a turnover and winning a draw control.
The team will take Monday off to prepare to meet up with the Greyhounds of UIndy on Tuesday in Indianapolis.
