GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – After more than a year off, the Colorado Mesa men's soccer team (0-0-1, 0-0-1 RMAC) played their first game against another opponent other than themselves in the Westminster Griffins, Sunday afternoon at Maverick Field.
The Mavericks as a team took a total of 17 shots, getting a couple of good looks at the goal mouth but unable to find the back of the net. The team also took four more corner kicks than their opponent, and kept the pressure on the Griffins back line.
As the first half was winding down,
Daisuke Takanaka snuck one to
Alec Fronapfel who quickly placed it past the Westminster's goalkeeper for the 1-0 lead.
With just eight minutes left in the game, on the verge of securing the win, the Griffins would spoil that thought as a corner kick opportunity led to a Griffin goal, tying it up at 1.
The teams headed into extra minutes, with the Mavericks taking a more offensive approach, while the Griffins focused more on defense. As the final buzzer went off the team, finished in a 1-1 tie to start the conference season.
Brendan Brown recorded four saves, playing all 110 minutes in the goal.
Staying in the comfort of Grand Junction, the Mavericks will welcome South Dakota School of Mines to Maverick Field next Sunday, Mar. 28 at 2:30 p.m.
