GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – Behind four goals from four different players, the Colorado Mesa men's soccer team picked up their first win of the season with a demanding 4-0 shutout of South Dakota Mines, Sunday afternoon on Maverick Field. Each of the goals were firsts for the players on the season, and three were first career goals in a Maverick uniform.
The ball remained on the Hardrockers half of the field for a majority of the afternoon, with just short-lived possessions lasting in Maverick territory. The Mavericks took a total of 29 shots, 14 on-target to their opponents total of two and just one on goal. They also had 14 corner kick opportunities, and created a lot of work for the Hardrockers back line.
Ethan Anderson converted off a free kick for the first score of the game, and then got in on two other goals for four points on the day.
Joey Joiner,
Daisuke Takanaka and
Fernando Morales all joined in on the scoring party in the second half, on their way to a convincing victory.
Joiner's goal came right at the 57
th minute, positioning it over the Hardrockers defense into the net for his first career goal. Just minutes later, Takanaka took a long shot from outside the box and found the top corner of the goal for his first goal in a Maverick uniform.
Morales who just joined the CMU squad earlier this spring, capped off the team's scoring in the 84
th minute with a clear look at the goal, opening his scoring career in just two games played.
After enjoying a couple of home games, the team will have a pair of road tests in Regis and UCCS this upcoming Thursday and Saturday respectively.
