Grand Junction, Colo. – The No.4 Colorado Mesa Mavericks didn't need extra overtime periods this time around, grounding the Chadron State Eagles in Tuesday's Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference quarterfinal game.
Tuesday's win also solidifies the Mavericks hosting the rest of the tournament this upcoming weekend.
By a 67-52 score, the Mavericks moved to 19-1 on the season and remained flawless on their home court. CMU could not be stopped in the paint with 42 out of their 67 total points made inside the lane, holding the Eagles to just 20 points in the paint. Defensively, the Mavs grabbed 38 boards to their opponent's 26, and kept the Eagles to under 30-percent shooting from the floor.
The first half consisted of the teams trading baskets, staying within four points of each other. Chadron would pull within one, before CMU put in a basket to create a little distance. A large part of the Eagles ability to keep up, was their five, 3-pointers to the Mavs two.
Chadron would try to convert on a second chance shot, but couldn't get it to fall, giving the Mavs a 26-23 lead after the first half.
Ethan Menzies added a quick 4-points to his total in the opening minutes of the second half, giving his team a seven-point edge. In turn it sparked a 10-0 run for the team, creating a double-digit advantage.
The Eagles shooting fell cold, while things started to click for the Mavericks. They would go up by as many as 19, as time slowly ticked down. The 15-point difference made it the Mavs third straight game defeating their opponents by double-figures.
Ethan Menzies racked up 19-points and 13-rebounds, and
Blaise Threatt added 13-points, seven rebounds and five assists.
CMU will meet up with the Adams State Grizzlies for the third time this season on Friday in the first semifinal game.
