Grand Junction, Colo. – Having had the luxury of being home for the first three games of the season, the Colorado Mesa women's soccer team will take their first road trip of the season just two hours southeast to Gunnison, meeting up with the Mountaineers for the second time in the span of a week. Kickoff is scheduled for 3 p.m.
The team will then make their way back to Grand Junction to open conference play against the Westminster Griffins on Sunday at noon.
WEEKLY RECAP
The two teams clashed last Saturday on Maverick field, as the Maroon and Gold dominated the second have to secure their first win on the young season, 2-0 over Western State.
Lexi Newton, with the help of
Sydney Hathaway, beat out the Mountaineer defense and found the net from the top of the box at the 62-minute mark to record her first goal of the season.
Twenty minutes later,
Kristen Capan took advantage of the second chance and headed a rebound shot into the opponent's goal for the eventual, 2-0 shutout.
The win puts the Mavs at 1-1-1 on the season thus far, and marked the first of head coach
Megan Remec's career.
MEETING WITH THE MOUNTAINEERS…AGAIN
Following Saturday's contest on Maverick Field, the Western Colorado Mountaineers hosted the Adams State Grizzlies on Tuesday. A second-half goal by the Grizzlies was all they needed to clinch a 1-0 win, and drop the Mountaineers to 0-3 on the season.
WCU has been shutout in the past two games, with Caileen Sienknecht scoring the team's lone goal thus far, back in the opener against UCCS. Sienknecht is credited with two of the teams eight total shots taken on the goal mouth. The Mountaineers have taken just 20 shots in three games, compared to their opponents who have combined for 54, with 30 taken on goal.
SCOUTING THE WESTMINSTER GRIFFINS
After a short road trip, the Maverick women's soccer team will return to their home turf on Maverick Field to kickoff conference play against the Westminster Griffins.
With a 1-0-2 record, the Griffins have only played one Division II opponent up until this point. Back on February 28
th, they stole a 2-1 decision over Southern Utah for their first win of the season. On Dumke Field the following weekend, they were left scoreless in a tie with Idaho State.
In Durango, Colo. last weekend, WC ended in tie on a late goal from the Fort Lewis Skyhawks. Dominique Estrada placed a shot in the goal at the 73
rd minute to unlock a scoreless match.
Women's game will begin at noon with the men immediately following at approximately 2:30pm.
