COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – After a tough loss the day prior, the Colorado Mesa women's lacrosse team bounced back with a dominant 16-7 win over the Tigers of Colorado College, Friday afternoon at Washburn Field.
Melanie Evans was unstoppable for the Mavericks, finding the back of the net four times to lead the team.
Regan Wentz and
Kiley Davis chipped in three goals each, with
Lauren Wick,
Taylor Jakeman and
Ashton Whittle also contributing multiple goals. Wick dished out three assists as well, followed by Wentz with two.
Lula Mitchell and
Adelaine Charlsen, combined for eight saves on the day, with Charlsen recording five saves, and Mitchell getting the win along with three saves.
As a team the Mavs withheld the Tigers to seven goals on the day on 18 shots. CMU scored 16 times, in 20 shots taken on goal. Colorado College committed three more turnovers, and were at a 16-8 disadvantage in draw controls, and 19-14 in ground balls.
Davis connected with Wick for the first score of the game.
Melanie Evans followed up with the first of her four goals on the day, and then Wentz added an assist and a goal to her stat line to give her team a 4-0 edge.
Bella Beattie who led the Tigers scoring efforts with three goals, put her team on the board around the 19
th minute of the first half. A minute later, Evans would build the lead back up to four with her second goal. Jakeman responded with back-to-back goals, sparking a 7-1 scoring run to end the first half with a 12-2 advantage.
The second half appeared to be more of a battle between teams, with the Tigers adding five more goals to their total. The Mavericks put in four goals of their own for the final 16-7 victory, and the first of the season.
The second half of the women's lacrosse road swing will take the Mavericks to St. Charles, Missouri and Indianapolis, Indiana to face off with Lindenwood and UIndy.
