RAPID CITY, S.D. – It took two overtime periods, but the Colorado Mesa men's basketball team escaped Rapid City with an 82-77 win over South Dakota Mines, Friday in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference play.
The two teams were evenly matched across the board, but South Dakota Mines struggled to keep possession of the ball turning it over 22 times to Mesa's 10. The Mavericks held a huge 51-13 advantage in bench points as well. When headed into extra minutes the Mavs sport a 4-0 record, including two double-overtime wins, and are 8-1 on the road this season, 13-1 overall.
Trailing by eight after the first half, the Mavs outscored the Hardrockers 36-29 to even the score and force a first overtime period. Tied up after the first overtime period, the teams headed into a second 5- minute period, which saw the Mavs use a 11-6 scoring advantage leading to their 82-77 triumph.
Blaise Threatt was an offensive threat posting a career-high 24 points on 10-of-17 shooting, three of which came from beyond the arc. The freshman also tallied five rebounds, six assists and a steal.
Georgie Dancer added 18 points for the Mavs, going 10-for-12 in free throws, and 2-for-3 from deep. Reese Johnson and
Jared Small followed up with 12 and 11 points respectively to round out the Mavs in double-figures. Small also led the team in rebounds with seven.
Monday's contest against No. 1 Colorado School of Mines has been postponed. The Mavs will host Adams State on Feb. 13.
