GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – Left handed pitcher
Ryan Day pitched a complete game shutout as the Colorado Mesa baseball team defeated the Northwest Nazarene Nighthawks 5-0 in the final game of the Courtyard by Marriott Leadoff Weekend at Suplizio Field.
Day scattered five hits, walked three and struck out eight in the nine innings of work. He only faced two baserunners in an inning just once and just two baserunners reached third base. The start was just his second as a Maverick, making one in during the COVID 2020 season.
The junior got all the run support he needed in the fourth inning as the Mavericks scored four runs on four hits in the frame.
Caleb Farmer had a RBI double to left center followed by a RBI single by
Chase Hamilton to give Colorado Mesa a 2-0 lead.
Later in the inning,
Matthew Turner delivered the big blow hammering the first pitch he saw over the wall in center field for a two-run homer and a 4-0 lead. The home run was his second of the season.
Colorado Mesa added an insurance run in the bottom of the seventh as
Conrad Villafuerte executed a safety squeeze to score Turner and make it 5-0.
Haydn McGeary was the lone Maverick with multiple hits as he finished the game 3-for-4 with a double.
No. 2 Colorado Mesa will open up Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference play next weekend on the road in Alamosa as they take on Adams State.
