Mavericks Avenge Early Season Loss, with 93-77 Triumph over Western State

Baskin records first double-double with 12-points and career high 13-rebounds

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – Looking to avenge their only loss of the season, the No. 5 Colorado Mesa Mavericks did just that, earning 93-77 triumph over rival Western State Friday night in Brownson Arena.
A quick rewind. Back on January 30th, when the teams met in Gunnison, Western State knocked in 12 3-pointers which fueled them to a 78-72 win.

That was not the case tonight, as the Mavs had a whopping 56 points in the paint and 27 second chance points, while limiting the Mountaineers to a 46.4 percent from the field, and 40 percent from beyond the arc. CMU continued to be impressive off the glass, grabbing 44 to the Mountaineers 23, 17 of which were offensive.

Converting off a Maverick turnover, the Mountaineers took an early 10-4 lead. Christopher Speller recorded a steal and headed to the foul line to tie up the game. Mac Riniker came up with a big offensive rebound, dishing it out to Georgie Dancer who sank a 3-pointer to the give CMU their first lead of the game.

From then on it was all Colorado Mesa, building up to an 18-point, 49-31 lead at the half.

The second half remained in favor of the Mavericks, keeping their distance and maintaining a double-digit edge. Around the three minute mark, Blaise Threatt recorded a steal which lead to a fast break layup, building his teams lead to 21.

Western would make the final basket of the game, but fell too far behind to close the gap.

Five Mavericks finished in double-figures, led by Georgie Dancer with 17. Threatt was up next with 16-points, followed by Ethan Menzies with 13. Jared Small was the fifth Mav in double-figures with 12-points. Freshman Trevor Baskin was a offensive and defensive threat tonight, registering his first career double-double in the first half, with 12-points and a career high 13-rebounds, rounding out his stats with three blocks and two assists.

Friday's win brings the Maverick's record to 17-1 on the season, with one game left in the regular season. Tomorrow's faceoff with the Fort Lewis Skyhawks is scheduled to tip-off at 6 p.m.
