Strong Start Leads Mavericks to RMAC Opening Victory

LAKEWOOD, Colo. – The Colorado Mesa women's basketball team opened the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference season with a 57-46 win over the Colorado Christian Cougars at the CCU Events Center.

Daniella Turner led all scorers with 20 points on 9-of-14 shooting from the field. She was 7-for-8 in the first half and added six rebounds and two steals.

Turner helped the Mavericks build a 21-point lead with 2:07 to play in the third quarter after Mariah Martin buried a three. But a 2-for-12 shooting performance had the Cougars cutting into the lead in the fourth quarter and had it down to nine points with 3:51 to play.

Martin finished with another stat stuffer line of 16 points, five rebounds, and seven assists. Sophie Anderson tied her season-high with 11 point.

Despite the tough fourth quarter, Colorado Mesa still shot 47.9 percent from the field and made over 72 percent from the free throw line.

Lourdes Gonzalez finished with a double double at 11 points and 10 rebounds while Jordyn Brown led the Cougars with 12 points.

The Mavericks will conclude the opening weekend as they head across town to take on the MSU Denver Roadrunners on Sunday at 1pm at the Auraria Events Center. The Roadrunners fell on Saturday to Westminster.
