Colorado Springs, Colo. – Just as they did in the game prior to break, the Colorado Mesa men's basketball team put together 47-points in the second half to come from behind for the 78-71 win over UCCS Friday at the Gallogy Events Center.
The Mavericks scored at a 53.6 percent clip in the second half, while holding the Mountain Lions to 32.3 percent. They also outrebounded their opponents 38-35,
Jared Small leading the way with nine on the evening. Small was one board shy of a double-double, tallying 20-points behind 7-of-16 and three, 3-pointers. Fellow senior,
Georgie Dancer matched the Mavs scoring high with 20-points of his own also pulling down seven rebounds, and handing out five assists.
Trevor Baskin (11),
Mac Riniker (10) and
Blaise Threatt (10) rounded out those in double-figures, Baskin also racked up three blocks to bring his season total to 22.
The first 20-minutes of play saw eight lead changes, the Mavs taking their largest lead at 15-11 on a second chance 3-pointer from Dancer. Back and forth the teams went, UCCS starting to break away with 2-minutes remaining at the half going up by as many as seven. That lead with shrink to five as Threatt put in a last second layup as CMU trailed 36-31 at halftime.
Out of the break, a series of Mavs scored to open up a 10-1 run to take over the lead at 41-40. After a trading the lead a couple more times, it was CMU who built up a lead, and didn't relinquish it for the remaining 10-minutes on their way to their fourth straight win.
Jon'il Fugett finished with 22-points for the Mountain Lions, Alijah Comithier followed up with 19 as the team's leading scorers.
The Maverick men continue their road trip south to New Mexico Highlands, opening the new year against the Cowboys who grabbed their first conference win over Westminster this evening, 68-64. Tip-off is scheduled for 5 p.m. at the John A. Wilson Complex.
