Mavericks Claim Three Wins at West Coast TOC

ROCKLIN, Calif. – The No. 6 Colorado Mesa women's wrestling team competed in the dual portion of the Women's West Coast Tournament of Champions on Friday (Dec. 17) afternoon. The Mavericks came away with a clean slate as they won all three of their matchups.
 
Here is a quick breakdown of each matchup.
 
Colorado Mesa 40, Umpqua Community College 5
The Mavericks won nine of the ten total bouts in the matchup, cruising to a 40-5 win over the WCWA member from Oregon. Three of those wins came by pin with the rest of the wins coming via the technical fall.
 
Maya Cortes scored a fall at 109 pounds at the 2:57 mark of the first period over Hinda Doucoure followed by an Alexis Allen pin at 116 pounds over Kathryn Philbrook at 2:09.
 
Washington native Tatum Heikkila closed out the pin session at 170 pounds with a fall over Autumn Perez at 1:50.

Colorado Mesa 31, #10 (NAIA) Midland (Neb.) 14
The Mavericks made it 2-for-2 after winning six of the ten bouts that included three wins by forfeit in a 31-10 win over No. 10 (NAIA) Midland University. The Mavericks once again got a huge boost from three pins.
 
No. 2 ranked Marissa Gallegos picked up a first round pin over Prethy Enriquez at 1:15 then Kaylee Haynes earned her second win of the day with a first round pin of Ashlee Palimo'o.
 
Caylee Collins earned her first win of the season in her debut as she pinned Jasmin Ballesteros in the second round at 3:41 to seal the match for the Mavericks.

Colorado Mesa 25, #9 (NAIA) Menlo College 21
The Mavericks made it a clean sweep on Friday as they took down a top ten team from the NAIA ranks in No. 9 Menlo 25-21 in their final dual of the day.
 
Each team won five bouts but the two forfeits at 143 and 155 pounds were too much to overcome for Menlo College. Maya Cortes worked a pin at 109 pounds in the second period at 3:39 against Nalani Kirkman while the other two contested wins came via the technical fall.

The Mavericks will be back in action tomorrow as they will participate in the Women's West Coast Tournament of Champions Tournament. The individual tournament is scheduled to begin at 11am in California.
