Mavericks Drop Narrow Overtime Matchup with Black Hills

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – Jared Small scored a season-high 18 points but it wasn't enough as the Colorado Mesa men's basketball team fell 75-73 in overtime to Black Hills State, snapping their 16-game home winning streak in Brownson Arena.

Colorado Mesa led 65-62 with just 22 seconds remaining in the game following a Small free-throw but with seven seconds left Yellow Jacket Sava Dukic nailed a three-pointer to knot the game at 65-65.

Blaise Threatt dashed the other direction and went to the basket for a layup and drew a lot of contact, but nothing was called, and the two teams headed to overtime.

Black Hills State built a five-point lead with 15 seconds to play in overtime when Threatt drew a foul and headed to the line for two shots. He buried the first one and intentionally missed the second one. Jared Small tipped the boul out to a wide-open Georgie Dancer who hit a three to cut the lead to two with just two seconds remaining. The Yellow Jackets were able to milk the clock out on the ensuing inbounds.

Small was 6-for-9 from the field and 6-of-8 from the line for his 18 points. He added five assists and six rebounds.

Georgie Dancer recorded his first career double-double with 13 points, 12 rebounds and four assists.

Blaise Threatt finished with 15 points and one rebound shy of a double double.

Trevor Baskin finished with 12 points and Mac Riniker had nine points. Both players were saddled with foul trouble.

Black Hills State's Joel Scott led all scorers and rebounders with 27 points and 14 rebounds in the winning effort. Scott picked up his fourth foul with 5:25 remaining in regulation and played the final 4:19 of regulation and all five minutes of overtime with those fouls.

Colorado Mesa will look to bounce back on Saturday evening as they play host to Chadron State at 7:30pm.
